Wasps and Hornets at a Glance
When disturbed, wasps can be very aggressive pests. Who hasn't experienced the wrath
of a wasp or hornet when a nest was disturbed?
Wasps commonly infiltrate homes in search of nesting sites and places to hibernate.
They often nest inside wall cavities and under fasciae.
Allergic Reactions
Some people can have severeeven life-threateningallergic reactions to
wasp stings. Make sure to get immediate medical attention if you experience symptoms
other than mild swelling in the area of a sting.
Wasp and Hornet Control
Treating the nest itself is the most effective method of wasp control. As a general
rule, control of wasp colonies in their nests should be attempted only at dusk or
after dark. During this time, nearly all members of the colony will have returned
to the nest, and they will be less likely to leave.
Follow these safety tips when controlling wasps:

|
Never attempt to remove a nest if you are allergic to the sting of a wasp or hornet.
|
|
Wear several layers of clothing to protect yourself from stings.
|
|
Stand a safe distance from the nest.
|
Wasps can be found virtually anywhere in the home. In most cases, when you find
wasps indoors you will encounter only one or two at a time. Wasps are often spotted
indoors in the spring when queens are looking for nesting sites or in the fall when
they are looking for hibernation sites.
